Making a Case for Statement Coats

Raise your hand if you're from someplace where you need to wear a jacket for more than half of the year. If you're raising your hand, hey girl hey. I feel your pain. Well, to me, it's not pain. I don't think that bracing the cold has to be our pain unless it's subzero with windchill and you have to clean the snow off of your car and hope to god that it doesn't take you twenty minutes like last time.

The trouble with wearing coats practically nine months out of the year is that they can, well, get boring. I wore a plain navy blue peacoat for several years of my life. There was nothing wrong with that navy blue peacoat from Delia's, besides the fact that I'm 99% sure I managed to rip a hole in the lining of both pockets. That's neither here nor there though. I learned that sometimes, one plain navy blue coat just doesn't cut it.

If you're going to spend 75% of the year bundled up in a piece of outerwear, you might as well have a little bit of fun with it. It's easier to justify having multiple coats when you need to wear one every single day of the year unless you're eager to freeze your buns off. Coats are vital for survival during the autumn and winter seasons that inevitably carry into spring. Playing around with colors, textures, and patterns is a simple way to breathe life into your outerwear collection and add a bit of spice to each ensemble with just a single piece.

This Marni jacket first appeared on the blog late in February. I find that it's the perfect coat for all seasons. Orange is great for fall and works well in the spring too. And as for winter, while orange might not seem like a typical color, it's nice to see against the white and occasionally muddy snow. Who says you have to have an all neutral wardrobe with a splash of red and green during the colder months? I say embrace whatever colors you want to. I have a kelly green cocoon coat from J. Crew that I love to pieces. In fact, before my old roommate met me, she knew me as the girl who wore the green coat on campus.

The other great thing about statement coat is that sometimes, it doesn't even matter what's underneath. Want to know what's under that Marni coat? It's a plain black turtleneck that I got at Target ages ago and a pair of Levi's 505 straight legged jeans that my aunt just gave to me the other day. An otherwise simple outfit got easily jazzed up with this plaid number. I could be wearing pajamas underneath and people might not even notice. And trust me, I have. You'll never see me in Target on a Sunday in anything but the clothes I slept in.

Statement coats could be anything. They could be a simple silhouette in a vibrant color, like my standard cocoon wool coat in a kelly green shade. It could be garish orange plaid with a big shearling color. Hell, it could be a faux fur hunter green bomber jacket that makes you look like some sort of Halloween costume at all times of the year. You can tailor a statement coat to your style preference. They make plenty of coats in multiple colors and even more so now than ever before, there are tons of fun and zany faux fur creations out in this world that won't cost you an arm and a leg.

If a coat is necessary regardless, you might as well have a bit of fun with it while you can. Embrace the opportunity to add some personality to the first thing that people will see if you're walking around during this coming winter (and trust me, it's coming).

Also, just to round out this post, I added a new tab and page to the blog. If you click Shop My Instagram, you can click on different outfits that I've featured on my feed and shop the pieces. I've only added a few of the more recent posts and I'll continue to add to the page as I upload my outfits. I'm trying my hardest to find exact pieces, but admittedly, a lot of my pieces are either from past seasons because I keep things for a while and because I shopped a lot at the consignment store where I worked and the outlet mall near me. Never fear though, I do try to find similar (and affordable, that's very important to me) piece
